Here are some of the ways we celebrate Earth Day everyday:
- Using repurposed and reclaimed materials wherever possible in our collections, including recycled oil barrels, recycled rubber from tires, and reclaimed teak wood salvaged from old buildings.
- Began the Indonesian Tree Planting Project, where we donated, planted and are currently monitoring over 500 trees in Central Java, Indonesia.
- Working alongside the villagers in Indonesia to help provide jobs and give back to the community.
- Our products are also GreenGuard and Indonesian Legal Wood certified.
Meet Philip Tuan, President of From the Source, a creator of sustainably sourced hardwood furniture and accessories located at 20 East 20th Street.
1. Tell us more about From the Source, its mission, and your factory in Indonesia.
Established in 2000, From the Source began as a small vertical company with the goal of producing high-quality timeless pieces made with unique hardwoods. Our mission was always to highlight the hand craftsmanship of the natural sustainable materials we had access to. We have always believed in quality over quantity and the importance of bringing expertly crafted products to our customers. Our collection features quality hardwoods in a variety of uncommon sizes and stunning grains.
Over the past two decades, we have been able to secure partnerships with villagers and forestry officials in Indonesia. We are getting not only sustainably sourced hardwoods but also unique pieces of history.
Sustainability is our focal point along with the design of high-quality low manufacture products that promote a chic and responsible lifestyle.
2. Describe your role as President. What aspect of the job excites you the most?
As the President of From the Source, my role is to provide overall leadership and strategic direction to our design team, as well as building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, and to ensure that our sustainability goals are always being met. Furthermore, my job has been to create and manage a vertical operation that is transparent and thrives because of clear communication.
I would have to say the aspect of the position that excites me the most would have to be seeing our designs be brought to life. From the birth of a concept through development to the day it arrives…there is nothing more beautiful.
3. This month we honor Earth Day, the annual April 22nd celebration that recognizes the importance of environmental conservation. What sustainable furniture items that you offer are trending among customers and what are your personal favorites?
To us, Earth Day is every day. Our focus is always on sustainable conscious design. Through our inventive use of upcycled materials we create collections that stand the test of time. Some of our favorite collections are definitely the Lancar and Grasshopper Rubber collections, which feature repurposed materials.
The Lancar collection is an example of how recycled oil drums can be used to create functional pieces, such as cabinetry. The beauty of the Lancar collection comes down to surface texture. You can see all of the details that appear due to the hand hammering process used by our craftsmen, which date back to their previous industrial lives.
The Grasshopper Rubber collection features repurposed rubber stripped from old discarded tires and is meticulously handcrafted by artisans. From individually washing, slicing, and weaving each rubber strap to securing the brass tacks in place to create a beautifully woven seat, the Grasshopper collection has been a favorite of our customers for years.
4. You studied graphic design, printing, and photography. What inspired you to choose a career in producing handcrafted furniture?
I know my background seems very diverse, but when you look at it, my passion has always been based around art and the creation of something unique.
I love furniture making. From the craftsmanship and materials, to the history and tradition; it is an art that requires skill, patience, and attention to detail. When you create something that is both aesthetically beautiful and functional, the joy it can bring to someone is limitless.
5. For those aspiring to work in the sustainable furniture industry, what professional advice can you share?
The best advice I could give would probably be to stay focused on your mission above everything else. Do your research and stay dedicated to your cause. Learn as much as you can about sustainability and eco-balance, green practices when it comes to production, and surround yourself with a network of other suppliers and partners that share your passion.
6. When you’re taking a break from your business in the neighborhood, how do you like to spend your time in Flatiron and NoMad? What do you love most about these vibrant communities?
I absolutely love the Flatiron neighborhood and the energy of the community is why I chose to bring our showroom here. This neighborhood is full of creatives and they are the most interesting people to talk to. One of my favorite pastimes would have to be just walking around, meeting our neighbors, and learning about their businesses and favorite local spots. Some of my neighborhood favorites would have to be Devoción, Cosme, SONA, Gramercy Tavern, Bar Verōnika, and of course, Eataly.
7. Finally, choose three words to describe Flatiron and NoMad.
Creative. Design-centric. Iconic.

]]>To us, Earth Day is everyday. Our focus is always on sustainable conscious design. Through our inventive use of upcycled materials we create collections that stand the test of time.
Recycling and upcycling are both methods used to reduce waste and promote sustainability but their approach and outcomes are very different. Recycling involves breaking down used materials and turning them into new products, while upcycling takes used materials and repurpose them into something of higher value.
From the Source features products made via the upcycling process, including our Lancar, Pele and Grasshopper Rubber collections.
Oil Drums are steel cylindrical barrels. The traditional steel drum is made from carbon steel, due to its endurance and strength.
From The Source has reimagined and upcycled the raw steel material into our Pele collection featuring colorful seating options, and the Lancar Collection with textured detailing which dates back to their previous industrial lives.
From the Source has saved over 1500 oil drums and counting from landfills.

While our Grasshopper collections several types of materials, our Grasshopper Rubber pieces feature rubber that has been stripped from old discarded tires and is meticulously hand crafted by artisans.
From individually washing, slicing and weaving each rubber strap to securing the brass tacks in place to create a beautifully woven seat, the Grasshopper collection has been a favorite of our customers for years.

When it comes to designing custom conference tables for upscale clients such as Chief NYC, there are a few key factors to consider. Not only do these tables need to be functional and practical, but they also need to reflect the unique style and personality of the client's business.
In terms of design, it's important to strike a balance between form and function. The table should be large enough to accommodate the client's needs, but not so large that it overwhelms the room. It should also have a clear focal point, such as a unique shape or an eye-catching finish.
Overall, designing custom conference tables is a unique and exciting challenge that requires a careful balance of form and function, style and practicality. With the right materials, design, and attention to detail, it's possible to create a table that perfectly reflects the client's vision and enhances the overall look and feel of the room.

In addition to residential spaces, we also design commercial offices and we love how customizable the pieces are at From the Source. Their ability to hand pick slabs, add power sources, and customize size and shapes allows us to take corporate spaces from sterile and bland to interesting and inviting!
This completely custom conference table and the custom nesting tables bring such warmth and character to this office located in Rockefeller Plaza, and our clients love that they are one-of-a-kind.

For this year's booth design, we decided to highlight some of our favorite Teak root products which embodied our comprehensive concept "Rooted in Sustainable Design."
The pieces included were the new dining verison of our best-selling Lotus Teak Root Coffee Table in a bleached finish, as well as our Teak Root Benches and accessories. Another featured collection that incorporated sustainable materials was the Pele, featuring counter stools and an occasional chair all created using repurposed oil drums. Another highlight was the overhead pendant lighting by Bali based designer, Ong Cen Kuang which featured cloud-like pendant lamps fully constructed by machine-washable zippers.
An investigation of natural curves, sculptural shapes, and contrasting color play has brought our new collections to light. Our sustainably designed and handcrafted furnishings become statement pieces that add a new twist to timeless and conscious design to last for generations to come.

Deep within the heart of Brooklyn, we've taken a client's request for a sustainable and minimalistic kitchen renovation and created their reclaimed dream kitchen. By using repurposed teak wood panels and iron from recycled oil barrels to overhaul this blank canvas into an inviting kitchen space.
The design was focused around the client's specific storage and functionality needs. With the goal of maximizing storage space while maintaining the key kitchen appliances and highlighting the reclaimed materials themselves, we were able to create a balance of modern design and artistic functionality.
Above: Kitchen area prior to any renovations.
Above: Reclaimed iron Cabinet modified from our Lancar Collection beside one of our large Erosion Bowls hand carved from Teak root.
The renovation materials include reclaimed teak wood panels and our iron Lancar cabinets made from recycled oil barrels.
The cabinets' key features are that they allow unsightly kitchen accessories like brooms and kitchen supplies, to be concealed out of view. Being that the client loves to cook with their family, a massive spice rack is hidden within the cabinetry and allows for their large collection of spices to be handy but also out of sight.
Lastly, the client's goal was to showcase the natural beauty of the materials as much as possible, while also keeping the surfaces clean and streamlined, any hardware like knobs or pulls were not used so as not to distract from the overall minimalistic design.

We are proud to showcase Brooklinteriors as our designer highlight of the month!
Three beautiful home interiors have been brought to life by Brooklinteriors and all three feature From the Source, sustainably sourced pieces.
]]>Three beautiful home interiors have been brought to life by Brooklinteriors and all three feature From the Source, sustainably sourced pieces.
Brooklinteriors was founded in 2019 by Prospect Heights designer Alicia Hassen, with the intent to re-imagine interior design services to benefit her Brooklyn borough.
Alicia uses a “Result-Oriented Approach to Design” which guides her to create elegantly designed spaces where she embraces the old with the new, to create a perfectly curated space that feels like home.
Check out the images below for Brooklinteriors' three projects featuring FTS designs.
Dining Nook of a Brooklyn Brownstone Renovation for Family of 4
To bring her client’s Park Slope Brownstone interior to life, Alicia of Brooklinteriors combined high contrast neutrals with a colorful spring accent palate. The overall concept combines a modern farmhouse and mid-century aesthetic, each piece hand picked to add to the playful and warm personality of the home.
The success in the design was not only through the stylistic elements, but through newly created spaces with dual functionality . A gorgeous bay window, now becomes a cozy reading nook for the kids; a cabinet space in the living room combines as an entrepreneur’s at home office, and a perfectly sized dining table easily extends to host a holiday dinner.
Brooklyn has the history to make any home feel special. This design featuring pieces from a variety of local, small and independent makers, creates an even more special space for this lovely family of four.
One of the family's favorites is From the Sources Slim + Kali live edge dining table paired with a waterfall Christy bench that looked like it was made for the space. It's the perfect spot to start the morning having breakfast together and end the day catching up together.
Extension Table and Seating for a Landmark Brownstone Renovation for Family of 5
The George's decided to make roots in Brooklyn after moving the family from London a work opportunity. To make Brooklyn feel like home, we incorporated their love for handmade, quality pieces with a Scandinavian influence.
The Orion Narrow bleached mango extension table and natural leather Grasshopper bench works perfectly for their large family, allowing them to comfortably entertain family and friends in their newly renovated home in the states.
Home Office for DUMBO New Development Condo
New condo development in DUMBO and design for newlyweds Allysa & Scott. They wanted their new home together to be a reflection of their combined aesthetic, love for eclectic goods and layered colors, patterns, and textures.
The Finn bookcase and Ciao desk with corvus legs were perfect to help achieve this look across the space!

As a part of our sustainability strategy, we work with Indonesian communities year round, to help replant trees and maintain current growths from previous years. In addition, we are sure to repurpose as many of our materials as possible. From the reclaimed teak wood in our table tops to recycled iron used to create our one of a kind bases, our goal is to help preserve and rehabilitate the environment in any way we can.
Ever wonder what we do with the left over scraps from making our benches, chairs, etc? We create our accessories! Because we don't want a single piece of our beautiful hardwoods to go to waste. Please see below for our reclaimed and recycled collections.

Featuring one of From the Source's talented designers, Kysheif DeGraffenreid, of KD Interiors, created a joint sitting room and outdoor space. Combining organics with sustainably sourced hardwood, Kysheif presented his favorite From the Source pieces, including a petrified wood console table, a teak wood outdoor dining table from our Gallant collection and outdoor dining and lounge chairs from our Grasshopper collection.
Sitting Room and Roof Deck by KD Reid Interiors
The joint sitting room and roof deck outfitted by designer KD Reid feels like a modern treehouse. “My favorite part was framing the outdoor deck like a work of art,” Reid says, noting that the entire design concept was inspired by the home’s mountain and lake views. In the gathering area, a petrified wood console table anchors a mix of natural and organic materials, which mimic local flora.

Our most iconic piece to date, the Perch stool is organic and sleek, and features a solid Teak root seat. Each seat is hand carved and completely unique from one another due to the marbling in the grain of salvaged Teak root. Choose from a variety of frame materials, including iron with a clear powder coat or brushed stainless steel.
The sourcing of our teak root seats begins at the Indonesian Teak tree farms, which are run by the Indonesian government. They have created a program that allows the villagers to come in and dig up the Teak trees' roots so that they can create products and sell to help subsidize income for the community. They create items like our Teak root ball sculptures and Erosion bowls.
Over the years, we've been working with these villagers to create the perfect hand carved Teak root seat which has now become essential to our signature Perch stool, as well as essential to the village as a steady flow of income.

The Lancar Collection is another example of how recycled oil drums can be used to create functional streamlined pieces, such as cabinetry. These uniquely designed handcrafted dressers have minor dents and traces of color which date back to their previous industrial lives.
A fresh take on iconic designs, the Pele Collection is rejuvenated by creative reuse. Recycled oil drums become festive dining chairs and spacious lounge chairs. Bright colors and graphics are preserved to become part of the design. Selecting and combining the patterns and colors with an artful eye, they shape the panels and weld them to a steel frame. The vibrant motifs offer a reminder of their past use, even as they take on a new form.
This Mika Bookcase and Ikan Bed both take shape by using reclaimed Teak wood panels and iron detailing.
Reclaimed Teak Wood:
Often repurposed from Teak panels salvaged from old buildings, reclaimed teak wood is much older than Plantation Teak wood and often exhibits characteristics such as elegance and increased durability.

Ah yes counters… as New Yorkers, we’re quite fond of our counters. From coffee shops and local restaurants to our very own homes equipped with spanning kitchen islands, counters have become a permanent fixture for most kitchen areas looking to create a slightly less formal dining experience.
We believe no counter is complete without the perfect set of counter stools. Counter stools differ from bar stools in that they are slightly shorter (counter stools have a seat height of roughly 24-28 inches) as opposed to bar stools, which have a seat height of roughly 30-34 inches.
Featuring durability, comfort and stunning design here are our top 5 favorite counter stools which will complement nearly any kitchen space (also available in bar heights.)
The Finch stool is the perfect blend of modern and organic. It's Iron frame holds together a solid hardwood seat with an engineered back. The seat material options include Tali wood with a natural finish (shown above), Mango wood with a natural finish, or Mango wood with an oxidized finish.
Perch yourself up on this organic yet sleek style stool. Each solid Teak root seat is hand carved and is completely unique from one another, due to the marbling in the grain of salvaged Teak root. Choose from a variety of frame materials, including iron with a clear powder coat, stainless steel, and iron with a white powder coat.

One of our sexiest pieces to date, the custom finish bleached mango slab top and Wish base dining table was brought to its new home, styled to perfection and we are obsessed.
Highlighted by creamy white walls, black stained oak dining chairs, custom lighting pieces and copper accents, this bleached mango dining table is an elegant addition to any well decorated space.
The custom 120” x 46” top was constructed by joining two mango slabs together. One of our signature items, our Mango Slabs are cut from one piece of solid mango wood and possesses a natural live edge on each side. Intended to resonate with the characteristics of our Cast Iron bases, these slab tops pair beautifully with our Wish bases.
Once joined, the slabs were bleached and placed atop a pair of sand cast Wish bases. The Wish bases are made entirely of Cast Iron and work perfectly for larger, heavier table tops. Their mid-century design was inspired by shape of a wishbone. The bleached finish is also part of FROM THE SOURCE's new offering of custom finishes.
Ordered by high-end interior design firm and design shop, Consort, they sent this massive beauty to one of their notable clients.
Some may wonder, how would you fit a 10' dining table through a door and into an apartment? By having a very resourceful designer on hand. Consort’s East Coast Senior Designer, Tyson Ness, is just that. With the help of highly-end residential movers, The Velvet Touch, and after receiving approval from the building, Ness directed the team to escort the 10” table into the building, lower the table on top of the elevator and down the elevator shaft, safely into the client's home.

After nearly two years of preparation Taiwanese Gastropub, Danlu opened it’s doors Wednesday, December 6 to join Philadelphia's bustling restaurant scene.
Inspired by the late night street markets of Taiwan, Danlu was founded by the same group that created French-Asian restaurant, Nectar (“Danlu” translates to “Nectar” in Chinese) lead by Henry Chu, Michael Wei, and visionary chef, Patrick Feury, alongside chef de cuisine, Michael Cooperman.
Located at 3601 Market Street, University City, PA, the two story venue was built out by NYC design firm, Jeffrey Beers International. JBI is a full service design studio with a wide array of award winning hospitality projects spanning the last 30 years.
The overall vibe of the space inspires warmth with deep gold and bold red tones which are enhanced by the rich hues of our tali wood pieces. Copper accessories and antique silver accent panels give depth and added style to the room.
The space features roughly 25 custom tables, ranging from medium rounds to iron rimmed communal bar tables, all in our vibrant tali. Our tali wood Finch bar stools help to tie the yellow stone bar with the main dining room.
Bold colored graphics stretch from the main floor bar up to the wood beam ceiling and accent the mezzanine’s intimate dining area.
For elevated Taiwanese street fare, small plates with big, bold flavors, and a seasonal cocktail and wine menu, be sure to check out Danlu next time you’re in Philly.
